Rue Louise Weiss : East Side Story

Every month, it’s party time around the Rue Louise Weiss, where the many contemporary art galleries bring together Parisian trendsetters for wildly popular preview shows. Formerly limited to the Rue Louise Weisse itself, the event has taken over Rue Duchefdelaville and Rue du Chevaleret, both home to new showrooms and part of an exciting art neighborhood with the seven original galleries, now grouped under the name Louise, as its core.

Over the years, the Rue Louise Weiss has established itself as a not-to-be-missed component of the Parisian art scene. The seven initial galleries, located behind the Grande Bibliothèque, have succeeded in attracting Parisians and foreigners, all eager to discover this diverse slice of avant-garde creation. And lo and behold, seven very soon became eleven…

So now Paris can boast another artistic neighborhood, right here in the ever-changing 13th arrondissement. Eventually, cramped for space on the Rue Louise Weiss, it incorporated the Rue Chevaleret and the Rue Duchefdelaville, a charming street with brick buildings and a big square.
At the corner of the Rue Louise Weiss and the Rue Chevaleret, a huge bulletin board let you in on the various gallery locations.

It’s not by chance that the newcomers are setting up shop here: they’re part of a larger artistic wave inundating the east side of Paris. On preview nights, a true frenzy takes hold of the neighborhood, generated by a bright and vivacious crowd of young people who hop from one gallery to the next.

On other nights, it’s more relaxed and people meet up at bistros for friendly chats or meetings between artists and gallery directors. It’s also a place to be seen if you’re young, good-looking, and creative.

But above all, these special evenings provide an occasion to check out what’s new and up-and-coming. You’ll hear people say, in French or in English, “I’ve already made the rounds. Meet me at the café when you’re done and tell me what you liked.” Or, “I love coming here because I always know I’ll see something I love.” And it’s true: here you’ll find a microcosm of the contemporary art world in all its manifestations, including photography, video, paintings, installations, and design.

These moving images by Cédric Buchet evoke fragments of daily life in Europe.
Always cutting edge, these galleries aren’t satisfied with only exposing talent already recognized in France or abroad. They’re more interested in true discoveries and often organize premieres for promising artists they believe in. So there’s always a surprise around the corner…. In the summer, the area is especially exciting, since several galleries host group expositions where you can marvel at the diversity of the art and artists.
