Spotlight on the Middle-Ages Museum
In the heart of the Latin Quarter, the former Hôtel des Abbés de Cluny and Gallo-Roman baths that make up the National Museum of the Middle Ages are now masterfully lighted. Each night this lighting draws attention to both of the abbey’s magnificent façades (some of which date back to the fifteenth century), its mullioned windows, the stairway of honour tower, its small windowed towers, the vaulted porch under the chapel and some trees, creating a fairy-like atmosphere. This project benefited from the patronage of such sponsors as La Fondation Electricité de France.
The Hôtel des Abbés de Cluny lights up the Quartier Latin night.
Its creator, Anne Bureau, managed to conserve the site’s intimacy while making it visible from the exterior. The “moving flame lighting” principal applied here (which produces shadows and turns red as viewers move away) is a great success. Anne Bureau continues to paint with light at the Musée de l’Orangerie des Tuileries. The Musée du Moyen Age needs restoration very badly. Let’s hope that shedding light on its unique architecture will hasten this important work.
