Philippe Starck gives its lustre back to Baccarat !

A few months ago, Baccarat moved into the sumptuous mansion that belonged to the world-famous Marie-Laure de Noailles and carried out its second cultural revolution: make trendy Parisians pour into the new premises to visit a luminously beautiful showroom, museum and restaurant (the offices are not open to the public). One of the most prestigious addresses in all of Paris, it is also one of the most fashionable. It also demonstrates the goal of Baccarat’s first revolution: a changeover from the failing tableware market to jewellery and accessories, which now account for 25% of the crystal master’s sales. Become a trendy Parisian yourself... join us for a guided tour of the fantastic, many-faceted work of renowned designer Philippe Starck and
the equally talented painter, Gérard Garouste.

A few months ago, the famous crystal master, Baccarat, left its ancestral premises on Rue de Paradis for this prestigious mansion, Place des Etats-Unis in the 16th. The Viscountess Marie Laure de Noailles lived here from 1920 to 1970. A patron of the arts, she financed films by Bunuel, Cocteau and Man Ray, promoted Dali and Mondrian and gave some of Paris’s most inventive balls. Baccarat gave Philippe Starck carte blanche to redecorate the 3000 square metres of this splendid 1895 construction, built in neo-Louis XVI style by the architect Sanson. The result is as magnificent as the place itself.

As soon as you enter, you are surrounded by mirrors and glass. Porch walls are decorated with bevelled mirrors and two fireplaces made entirely of mirrors. At the far end, the kind of sumptuous chandelier only Baccarat can produce dips half its crystal splendour into an aquarium! After you have gone by a lift in glowing red glass, you come to a large salon with imposing display windows and a luminous 13-metre long crystal table holding tableware collections.
The ground floor is Baccarat’s new showroom, which is open to the public every day except Sunday. Several other surprising salons present Baccarat jewellery, furniture, and lighting collections. Apparently inspired by the project and the place, designer Starck created a crystal chair two metres high. It can be found at the foot of the main staircase, which is also grandiose. From the ceiling hangs a majestic, slowly turning chandelier that lights the stone stairs leading to the first floor. Here, the Jean-Michel Frank seal-skin covered salon has been transformed into a gallery-museum for Baccarat collections. Frescoes by Gérard Garouste representing a “Water, Earth and Fire” allegory enchant visitors as they enter the small, adjoining rotunda salon.
And, since this room houses such Baccarat masterpieces as the extraordinary red cut glass “Simon Vase” created for the 1867 World’s Fair, the enchantment continues. Marie-Laure Noaille’s Louis XIV dining room is now Baccarat’s Crystal Room restaurant. Here again, Philippe Starck has left his mark: large wall panels reveal bricks bordered with gold-trimmed woodwork and the tables, covered by Porthault tablecloths, are decorated with sumptuous tableware. All the extremely chic furniture was created by Starck. Large letters facetiously inform diners: “there’s nothing to eat tonight” (Ce soir, y’a rien à manger)... The Baroque and elegantly irreverent spirit of Baccarat’s new headquarters is also reflected in its restaurant. Manager Thierry Burlot founded the XV Restaurant and was also head chef and manager at Armani’s restaurant.
For breakfast, lunch or dinner, customers may enjoy simple or refined meals (of mostly French cuisine) for approximately 60 Euros/person. An exceptional choice of wines, including a wide per-glass selection, allows customers to celebrate their recent crystal purchases in a stylish way. Baccarat’s Crystal Room has become one of the Capital’s hippest meeting places (tables must be reserved 1-2 months in advance). This magical place has from three to five hundred visitors each day. The high-fashion world has chosen it for private cocktail parties and celebrations. Bernadette Chirac likes showing it to France’s honoured guests. Beginning in September, a small concept store will sell Baccarat objects for more affordable prices. A must-see place to add to your touring agenda!
