The Cordeliers Convent: A Trendy Monument

Situated at 15 Rue de l’Ecole de Médecine in the 6th arrondissement, the Cordeliers convent is experiencing a second childhood, at least if you judge by the number of public relations events that have recently taken place there.

Perfume launches, musical evenings, presentations of new products, even fashion shows…
The building’s origins date from 1221, when the third order of Saint Francis of Assisi was established. Its members, known as the Cordeliers, enjoyed special protection, including from King Charles V, who contributed to the creation of the convent.
The façade of the Cordeliers convent is a mixture of several styles.
The Cordeliers convent soon became a place of great religious and historical significance. In 1783, the new map of Paris was developed in the immense gallery above the cloister. Marat was buried in a corner of the garden in 1783.

Apportioned to the Ecole de Médecine, the convent was slowly demolished, starting with the church and ending with the cloister in 1877. Today, only the 15th-century refectory remains. This lovely edifice is lit up by vast widows that cast a very pretty light on the room. Besides events and exhibits, private visits are permitted.
